Summer Volunteer Opportunities
Summer Reading Club Helpers
Summer Reading Club Helpers assist the Youth Services Department Librarians in registering families for Summer Reading Challenges using Beanstack, logging reading for patrons, handing out prizes, making craft packets, and helping with library events throughout the summer.
- Earn one (1) hour of community service per hour served at the volunteerdesk
All Year Volunteer Opportunities
Adopt a Shelf
Volunteers select a section of shelves located in the Youth Services Department, to keep in order (This is called Shelf Reading). Some sections require a bigger time commitment to keep in order than others. Library staff will help you pick a section that fits within the amount of time you are willing to commit. Cleaning supplies will be provided for you to lightly dust the section of shelves you have adopted.
- Volunteers are asked to come in at least once per month (Any time that fits within their schedule)
- Earn credit based on the amount of time spent on the shelf (Max two (2) hours per visit)
Attend Library Programs
Attend any teen program at the library and receive one (1) hour of credit per program attended
Cards For Kids
Volunteers entering grades 7-12 will make cards for hospitalized children.
- Earn one (1) hour of community service per five (5) cards
- You may submit pictures of up to fifteen (15) cards per month (For a total of three (3) hours of service)
- Each card should feature a positive/uplifting/inspirational message that could be enjoyed by anyone
Cards For Seniors
Volunteers entering grades 7-12 will create cards for senior citizens/the elderly who are isolated
- Earn one (1) hour of community service per five (5) cards
- You may submit pictures of up to fifteen (15) cards per month (For a total of three (3) hours of service)
- Each card should feature a positive/uplifting/inspirational message that could be enjoyed by anyone
Cards For Soldiers & Veterans
Volunteers entering grades 7-12 will make cards for soldiers and/or veterans.
- Earn one (1) hour of community service per five (5) cards
- You may submit pictures of up to fifteen (15) cards per month (For a total of three (3) hours of service)
- Each card should feature a positive/uplifting/inspirational message that could be enjoyed by anyone
Book Paramedics
Go through children’s books page by page to look for any damage. Give any damaged books to Miss Pat.
- Earn credit based on the amount of time spent looking for damage (Max two (2) hours per visit)
Monthly Writing Prompt
Each month, we will post a new writing prompt for you to respond to. Your response should be about 300-500 words and can be emailed to Miss. Tanya (tsuarezmatos@longbeachlibrary.org). In your email, please indicate if you’d like your writing shared on our social media/website/ or newsletter. If you’d like, we can share it anonymously.
- Earn two (2) hours a month
Teen Book Lists
Compose lists of twenty (20) books based on provided themes. These lists will primarily be used to help us create book displays for teens in the library. Some lists may be used to create theme-based bibliographies or book recommendations.
- Earn one (1) hour per list
- You may submit up to three (3) lists a month (For a total of three (3) hours)
